Shorter path from idea to industry in Copenhagen

(Scroll ned for dansk version)

Being inventive will become easier for researchers. Finding great ideas to invest in will become easier for companies. Linking idea and investment should become a lot easier, when six “Capital Region of Denmark” experts in the field of patenting and licensing join the technology transfer office at The University of Copenhagen on March 1st. 2017. The joint staff will be housed in Copenhagen Science City at Universitetsparken 1.

Better helpers together
The Capital Region of Denmark unit for Research and Innovation will continue to assist inventive researchers from the many hospitals of the Region, while the Technology Transfer Office of UCPH will support fundamental research on its way from lab to society. The two offices have been collaborating since 2011 but placing them in the same house will build up the field, says Karen Laigaard, Head of Technology Transfer I Research and Innovation, University of Copenhagen.

“Having just one door to knock on should make life easier for the researchers who hope to patent and commercialize their inventions. We also believe that we will become better helpers. In part because we will avoid parallel efforts. In part because staff tend to improve their skills by sharing knowledge with colleagues”, says Laigaard.

Improving health, creating jobs
The units merge to ensure that novel treatments are shared and business opportunities pursued. That is not all though. The Capital Region of Denmark and the University of Copenhagen also hope to reinforce the ties between fundamental and clinical research. The “Region” staffers have an impeccable track record when it comes to commercializing inventions for clinical use, while their counterparts from the University have years of experience in supporting inventors from the six faculties of UCPH. In 2016, The UCPH Tech Trans Office handled 88 patent applications and concluded 28 licensing agreements. Five of these were new spinout businesses.

Karen Laigaard hopes that the physical co-location of the two units will make it easier for investors from Denmark and abroad to find relevant intellectual property to back.

With this One-Stop-Shop located at the University of Copenhagen our external partners and customers will get easy access to researchers and their results in all clinical and scientific fields. I am confident, that businesses as well as investors will appreciate that”.

Videns vej til nytte bliver kortere i København
